IT managers have many tasks in their hands such as network monitoring, auditing, security, compliance, etc. Another important thing is permission management. This ensures that appropriate permissions are set on the file or folder with users.
You may want to check the NTFS permissions to know which permissions are set for which users. Sometimes you may need to raise the permissions or vice versa. In this guide we will show you how you can check NTFS permissions, using the usual method and using a special tool.
What is the difference between NTFS permissions and share permissions?
Now, many confuse NTFS permissions with share permissions, but in reality, the two are slightly different. Both serve the same purpose of preventing unauthorized employee or third party access to your critical folders on your network.
Simply put, sharing permissions mean that you can allow or deny certain permissions to files or folders on the network. These permissions will not apply to users accessing files locally. Moreover, share permissions do not give you the option to apply permissions to subfolders and individual objects.
On the other hand, NTFS permissions are permissions that are allowed or denied to users accessing files locally. NTFS permissions, unlike share permissions, apply to both network users and local users.
